Serial Com Port Redirector

Serial Com Port Redirector

Quick Overview

The Serial COM Port Redirector creates a virtual COM port on a PC for applications to use networked serial servers. The application software should be able to use the virtual COM port to connect to a remote device as if it were directly connected to the PC. The software is compatible with a wide range of TCP/IP-based serial servers and the Serial/IP Redirector supports advanced protocols and offers highly configurable virtual COM ports.

Details

The COM Port Redirector can be used in conjunction with SSE232 converters to provide a means to transfer data from an RS232, RS422 or RS485 serial port via a TCP/IP data packet to a remote PC over the Internet. The software will create a virtual COM port on the remote PC that connects directly to the required SSE232 converter and on to the RS232. RS422 or RS485 device on site. This will create a transparent serial connection that allows you to use the standard device software on the remote PC to control your device.

This software is compatible with a wide range of TCP/IP based serial servers and supports advanced protocols as well as highly configurable virtual COM ports.

On the client computer running Serial/IP

  • Add virtual COM port using the Serial/IP Control Panel and configure them to use the SSE serial server.
  • Access your equipment via the virtual Serial/IP COM port instead of local physical COM ports.
  • Your existing software will open, read and write to the virtual COM ports using the standard COM port API.
  • Serial/IP Redirector automatically makes TCP/IP connection to the serial server and relays the virtual COM port data to remote devices.

At the remote location

  • The serial server accepts connections from Serial/IP, then converts and relays the data stream and control signals to the server's serial ports.
  • Wireless modems can be used instead of serial servers.
  • The field equipment gets the data stream through serial cables or direct hardware integration.
